Extraordinary mid-eighteenth-century Sicilian cart crosspiece, from a noble family's cart.
The piece combines a carved wooden base, depicting a battle scene with horses and soldiers, with a complex, finely wrought iron structure. The iron decorations take the form of vine shoots and heraldic shields, forming a suggestive family tree: the barred figures indicate the deceased, while those painted with human faces represent living members.
On the sides stand out two highly expressive carved Sicilian Moor heads, symbols of strength and island identity. The crosspiece bears the inscription "Librio Sebastiano costruttore carro Floridia," attesting to its artisanal origin.
The presence of the original 15 cm nails, a sign of authenticity, completes the piece.
A rare, theatrical, and historically significant object, perfect for hanging or displaying above a piece of furniture.
